Here's a game from about a month ago. It wasn't one of the greatest games ever played, but let me tell you. FUN WAS HAD. A friend and I invited someone to play with us, who we had never played before. Little did we know, she grew up in a scrabble family. A privilege (or horror) some of us don't get to experience. I don't think I played scrabble until I was at least...12 or so. Maybe that explains why I tend to go for silly words instead of 30-pointers.
As you will notice the entire upper left quadrant of the board is empty. I always note the way in which the words spread out during the course of a game because I'm strange and find it interesting. One player (not me), places R _ P E on the board. Immediately, everyone judged him for his choice of word, which he then decided the blank was an "O", not "A". So, he escaped being hassled as a perv. But only until he later placed the "G" in front of the same word, and we got "Grope". This guy was ridiculous!
Anyways, this girl totally hustled us out of $300,000. We play high stakes because it brings quite a rush. Speaking of high stakes... I was thinking of inventing some kind of Scrabble/Texas Hold 'Em hybrid. I have yet to try it, but in my mind it goes something like this:
1. a dealer passes out 3-5 tiles to each player.
2. Players bet/check whatever...
3. Dealer places 3 tiles on the board, at random spots.
4. Players bet/check whaterve...again
5. Dealer places 2 more tiles at random spots.
6. The player that can come up with the best words (most points) from their tiles and the tiles on the board wins the hand.
Now that sounds a bit lame, but in my head it seems like the best game EVER.
